  • Why Every Day Is Autism Awareness Day In Our Family

    Today is Autism Awareness Day, and while many will wear blue, share a post, or show support online, I want to share something deeper. For my family — and for countless others — autism awareness isn’t something we celebrate once a year. It’s every single day. It’s the rhythm of our lives, the decisions we make, the love we give, and the battles we face.

    Autism isn’t just something we talk about. In our home, autism has a name: Akintade.

    The Journey to Diagnosis: A Long Road Without a Map

    When Akintade was diagnosed, it didn’t come as a neat package with answers. It came with questions, delays, and heartache. The process of getting him assessed was like walking through molasses — slow, sticky, and frustrating. Long waiting lists. Professionals who didn’t understand. A healthcare system that made us feel like we were asking for too much.

    But as any special needs parent will tell you, getting a diagnosis is only the first hurdle.

    The Battle for Support in a System That’s Not Built for Us

    Once we had a diagnosis, the next battle was accessing meaningful support. Help exists, but it’s buried under red tape, funding cuts, and endless forms. You need to become a part-time lawyer, full-time advocate, and occasional warrior just to secure your child’s basic rights.

    And yet — somehow — I had to keep pushing forward in my career. Yes, I am a high-profile professional. A mother and a woman with a powerful career. But you’d be shocked how often people are surprised by that.

    “How do you do it all?”

    “You mean you still work?”

    As if mothers of children with special needs should disappear from ambition.

    The Stereotypes, the Stares, and the Silence

    There’s the stares from strangers when Akintade is having a sensory moment in public. The chastisement from Government departments when you ask for what your child needs, as though autism only matters if you earn below a certain threshold. The whispers, the side-eyes, the unsolicited advice from people who have never walked in your shoes.

    And in my own ethnic group, the ignorance can be especially painful. I’ve been advised — no, instructed — to visit spiritualists. To “pray it away.” I’ve been told my son’s condition was due to spiritual warfare or ancestral curses. And I’ve been told — more than once — that I’m to blame.

    Families Like Mine Don’t Need Pity. We Need Partnership.

    We need people to understand that autism doesn’t have a “look.” That children like Akintade are not broken. They’re beautifully, uniquely wired. They may speak differently, learn differently, play differently — but they are worthy of love, patience, and celebration.

    And we, as parents, don’t need pity. We need:

    • Respect.
    • Real support.
    • Relief from policies that punish us for asking for help.
    • Space to be both parents and professionals — without judgment.

    Let’s Celebrate Autism – Every Day

    Today, I invite you to not only celebrate children like Akintade, but the families who love them fiercely. We celebrate:

  • A Tale of Two Realities: Raising a Child with Special Needs in Africa vs Developed Nations

    n a small town tucked away in the heart of Africa, lived a bright-eyed boy named Kweku. He had an infectious laugh, a fascination with spinning bottle caps, and a soul as vibrant as the morning sun. But Kweku was different. He didn’t speak like the other children his age, avoided eye contact, and had meltdowns that his mother, Abena, struggled to understand. After years of confusion, she finally heard the word—autism.

    Now imagine James, a boy in the UK diagnosed with autism at the age of three. His parents were guided through a structured support system—from speech therapy and special education plans to respite care and inclusive schooling. James had access to assistive technologies, trained educators, and a community that, while not perfect, acknowledged his needs and empowered his family.

    The Stark Contrast

    In developed nations like the UK and the USA, awareness and infrastructure for children with special needs have come a long way. Systems are in place: early intervention programs, inclusive education policies, health insurance that covers therapy, and social services that provide emotional and financial support.

    Back in Africa, however, Kweku’s diagnosis became a lonely journey for Abena. There were no nearby specialists. The local school labeled her son “stubborn” and “possessed”. Autism was often misunderstood as a spiritual curse, and stigma clung to the family like a shadow. Therapy, if available, was expensive and largely confined to private clinics in major cities. Most African parents of children with special needs find themselves navigating uncharted waters with little to no help.

    The Emotional and Financial Toll

    In developed countries, while the journey is still challenging, there is often a network—both formal and informal—that buffers the emotional toll on families. Support groups, parent workshops, and inclusive media representation foster a sense of community.

    But for African parents like Abena, isolation is common. Many mothers become full-time carers, giving up their jobs and social lives. Fathers sometimes walk away. Extended family may distance themselves out of fear or shame. The financial burden can be crushing, with therapy, transport, and specialized learning tools beyond the average family’s means.

    How African Governments Can Bridge the Gap

    1. Raise National Awareness: Launch nationwide campaigns to destigmatize autism and other developmental disorders. Incorporate local languages, cultural nuances, and community leaders in messaging.
    2. Train Professionals: Invest in training healthcare workers, teachers, and social workers to identify and support special needs early.
    3. Incentivize Inclusive Education: Enforce policies that mandate inclusive learning environments in public schools. Offer training and resources to educators and caregivers.
    4. Subsidize Therapies and Medication: Provide public funding or insurance coverage for therapies like speech, occupational, and behavioral therapy.
    5. Support Parent Advocacy Groups: Fund grassroots organizations run by parents of children with special needs. These networks are often lifelines in communities where formal systems are weak.
    6. Develop Rural Outreach Programs: Children in rural areas are doubly marginalized. Mobile clinics, telehealth platforms, and traveling therapists can bring help closer to them.

    Fifteen years ago, I sat across the table from my son, guiding him through Verbal Reasoning puzzles, Non-Verbal Reasoning sequences, complex maths problems, and English comprehension passages—preparing him for one of the toughest academic challenges a child can face: the 11 Plus exams. It was more than just an exam; it was a gateway to opportunity.

    What started as one child’s preparation quickly became a movement. Parents began reaching out, asking for guidance. I saw bright, capable children struggling, not because they lacked intelligence, but because they lacked the right strategy. I knew I could help.

    There are moments in life when we stop and wonder: How did I get here? As a professional mother raising an autistic adult, I often find myself reflecting on this question. Not out of regret, but from a place of deep contemplation. Raising a special human is a journey filled with both immense joy and overwhelming challenges.     Faith has been my anchor, my guiding light, and the foundation that holds me together on the hardest days. There have been countless moments when I have felt exhausted, stretched beyond my limits, and unsure of how to keep going. But somehow, I do. And I know it’s not by my strength alone.

    My days are anything but ordinary. Each morning starts with ensuring my son gets the right start to his day—preparing special diets tailored to his needs, supervising carers to ensure they provide the right level of support, and making sure the house is in order to provide a comfortable and structured environment.

    Then there’s my professional life. I have a demanding job that requires focus and efficiency. Balancing work deadlines with the unpredictability of autism is a skill I have had to master over time. There are days when everything flows smoothly, but there are also days when a meltdown, a sudden change in routine, or an unexpected challenge requires me to shift all my priorities in an instant.

    I won’t pretend it’s easy. There are nights when exhaustion takes over, and I wonder what my life would have looked like had I walked a different path. Would it have been simpler? Would I have had fewer worries? Fewer responsibilities? It’s hard not to ask those questions sometimes.

    The Grace That Sustains Me

    But then, I remember. I remember that this life, this journey, was entrusted to me by God. He saw me fit to raise this special angel, and though the road is often rough, I know I am never alone. His grace is sufficient.

    Faith reminds me that my son is not a burden—he is a blessing. He has taught me patience beyond measure, resilience in the face of adversity, and an unconditional love that words cannot fully capture.

    Faith gives me the strength to show up every single day, even when I feel I have nothing left to give. It helps me to see the beauty in the small victories—the moments of connection, the milestones that others may take for granted, the laughter that fills our home despite the challenges.
